16/Oct/2023 Update - Thank You for your videos for the 2023 Malibu Virtual Wake Open
Entry to the 2023 Malibu Virtual Wake Open has now closed and we'd like to say thank you to those who have submitted videos! We have had over 40 videos and are adding them to the competition software to enable judging.
Judging will take place this week, with results posted online next week!
If anyone has had technical issues with submitting their run please contact us for assistance.
Newsflash - Deadline Extended to 15/Oct/2023 at 6pm
Note the deadline for video submission is now Sun 15/Oct/2023 at 6pm. Bad weather, broken boats and lake algae has limited the ability of a number of riders to get out and film their runs - we have extended the deadline by a week or so to help get those runs captured!

Upload Your Video for the 2023 Malibu Virtual Wake Open
Start date: The video can be recorded at any time from 1 January 2023 till the closing date.
Closing date: 15/Oct/2023 at 6pm
In a change from last year, once you’ve submitted a filmed run you’ll be able to submit replacements. So you can submit a run early in the season and continue through the season to look to better it!
You may only enter one wakeboard age division. If you submit runs for more than one division we will take the division indicated on your later submission as the chosen division. We reserve the right to amalgamate divisions if there are insufficient entries, and/or expand divisions if there are numerous entries.
We’ll be making some awards throughout the year and releasing some clips of runs whilst holding back release of full clips till the final results are judged.
The video can be recorded at any venue in the world.
The competition is open to overseas riders provided they are BWSW members.
* Please read all the rules and information below prior to submitting your video.
Para Divisions
For 2023 WakeboardUK is introducing Para divisions run for wakeboarders and wakesurfers with affected movement, coordination, vision or intellect.
We reserve the right to introduce categorisation or amalgamate categories once entries are in, depending on the volume of entries. Please note that judging is subjective, and that includes the judging of the level of difficulty in relation to the individual impairment.Cost
To maximise participation this competition is free of charge to all entrants. You must however be a BWSW member to enter, entry confirmation will be checked prior to judging and non-members will be disqualified from the event unless they confirm their BWSW membership.

Wakeboard Run Format
Each rider shall undertake the following run:
- Maximum of 5 tricks
- There shall be no falls in the run
- Riders shall start their run when the rider cuts out from the middle of the wake to start their tricks or when they pass the start buoy of the course.
-
IWWF wakeboard rules apply
- We reserve the right to use a heat system using the single submitted video if entry numbers dictate it.
- Runs will be scored on:
- Execution - This reflects the level of perfection to which each manoeuvre was performed.
- Intensity - This reflects how big the moves were performed and the technical difficulty of the tricks executed.
- Composition - This reflects the overall composition of the routine in terms of the rider's ability to perform a variety of manoeuvres in a flowing, creative sequence.
-
Groms will not be limited to a number of tricks and will instead perform a run that has a maximum of 60
seconds
- The time of the Grom pass will start when the Grom waves to the cameraman
- Coaching from the boat is not allowed. Saving of tricks with boat speed or boat direction adjustment is not allowed. The wearing of impact vests is mandatory. Infringements of these rules is likely to be penalised with disqualification.
Wakeboard Filming Rules
Each submitted run should be filmed as follows:
- Filming should be started when the rider cuts out from the middle of the wake to start their tricks or when they pass the start buoy of the course
- Filming should finish a minimum of 2 seconds after the rider lands their final trick
- Filming should be from within the boat or from the tower (not be from the swim platform)
- There should be no breaks in the film footage
- The rider should be fully within the frame for the entire video
- The water should be fully within the frame for the entire video so you can clearly see the height of tricks
-
Filming should be taken on a modern smartphone
- e.g. iPhone/Android 3 years old or newer
-
Filming should be in landscape mode
- e.g. hold the phone so it is wider than it is tall
-
Filming should be at the highest resolution possible
- e.g. 4k if your phone supports it
- No music shall be added to the video
- No editing of the video shall be undertaken
- The videos should not have been published on social media or otherwise prior to the competition completion date.
Wakeboard Film Example
Here is an example film clip from a wake and iphone filming test with Luca in Abu Dhabi. This clip meets the filming guidelines and would be acceptable for judging.
- Note the lighting is also good (sun towards the rider instead of behind them) so grabs and such can be easily be seen and judged fairly.
- The footage was taken from the boat on an iphone 11 plus at 4k with 2x optical zoom and no editing other than trimming. The iphone was held in landscape mode, e.g. wider than tall.
- Note there were 5 tricks which were filmed correctly with the rider in the frame at all times.
